‘Edge’ (VDA ‘16).

Every year, the international company Verallia ( Saint-Gobain S.A., France) launches its own glass bottle design competition called Verallia Design Awards (VDA), in Argentina. 2016’s topic was to design a champagne bottle for two different categories: High End and Popular Premium. There was also a theme that designers had to follow, which was ‘travel’. I presented 2 proposals, one for each category, being the Popular Premium category the one for which I ended up winning the 1st place, with my bottle ‘Edge’.

At first, honestly I was a bit lost, designing a champagne bottle that somehow had to be related to the idea of ‘travel’ seemed a bit tricky to me, but I knew one thing for sure: since it was something purely conceptual, to get the judges interest and attention, I had to make something both simple and meaningful. I wanted the judges to see that it could happen, that it could perfectly be real and also appealing. So after playing for a while with very disconnected ideas, I came up with the concept of ‘Edge’. Traveling for me means to cross boundaries, to go beyond a limit, a horizon that offers opportunities to those willing to take a step forward, it’s a clear division. I wanted my bottle to express all of those things, so I literally used as a resource a 3-dimensional line that cuts through the body of the bottle, an edge. For this edge to stand out and truly show my intentions, I decided to keep the rest of the bottle with very little detail, and an easily recognisable shape. The bottle had to retain its typical shape to effectively communicate that it was in fact, a champagne bottle, with a little bit more meaning than just a glass object. I have to admit, this sort of process is the kind that I truly enjoy, it is very good exercise to be able to play with both form and meaning in such a way, so freely but focused, you are your own judge. This was one of the main reasons for which I chose to add this project to my portfolio, to show that I understand how design can be experienced in so many levels and different ways, and it is not always just about deadlines or technical novelty, and market research but also about being able to express through matter, an idea that is pure, honest, and meaningful. This has been a project from which I actually ended up being truly satisfied with the outcome.
